WORTHWHILE CEMETERY PROJECTS

Recordings: 
(entry permission may be required)

Alphabetical Listing - names and years only, names and full dates, or full inscriptions
Row by Row Listing - names and years only, names and full dates, or full inscriptions (with or without index)
Listing (alphabetical or row by row) with obituaries, genealogical data, histories, etc.
Listing (as above) with cemetery history
Listing (as above) with history and photographs of stones and/or people buried there

Maintenance - Landscape: 
(permission will be required)

Pick up litter and trash
Mow grass (be very careful near markers)
Weed removal (take great care with herbicides near markers or valuable plants)
Clear brush, vines, and ivy (careful not to remove old roses or heritage plants)
Prune or remove dead limbs or trees (watch that falling limbs don't injure volunteers or markers)

Maintenance - Cemetery Structures: 
(permission will be required)

Clean or remount signs
Clean or re-erect fencing
Clean or repair cemetery shelters or other structures
Repaint signs
Paint or repaint fence
Paint or repaint cemetery shelters or other structures

Maintenance - Cemetery Parking and Pathways: 
(permission will be required)

Pick up litter or trash
Provide any required landscape maintenance
Repair potholes
Resurface parking area and/or pathways
Paint parking space lines

Maintenance - Grave Markers: 
(permission will be required from descendants)

Clean markers (lots of water and soft bristle brushes only)
Remove stains from grave markers (great care must be taken - obtain details from OHCA)
Reset tilted grave markers (great care must be taken - obtain details from OHCA)
Repair broken markers (great care must be taken - obtain details from OHCA)
Place misplaced markers (sexton records must be consulted - obtain details from OHCA)

Landscaping: 
(permission will be required)

Prepare and plant bulb gardens
Prepare and plant annual and perennial flower or wildflower gardens
Plant ornamental shrubs
Plant hedgerows for wildlife habitat
Plant trees (consult an arborist about growth habits)
Plant grasses or ground covers

Cemetery Parking or Pathways: 
(permission will be required)

Plan pathways for the cemetery that will preserve markers and landscape features (an accurate plot map will be required to prevent crossing unmarked graves)
Create and surface cemetery pathways
Build and erect footbridges as required to cross obstructions (culverts, creeks, boulders, etc.)
Plan a cemetery parking area (an accurate plot map will be required to prevent covering unmarked graves)
Create and surface a cemetery parking area
Build and erect footbridges from parking area into cemetery if required to cross obstructions (culverts, creeks, boulders, etc.)

Cemetery Structures: 
(permission will be required)

Build and erect cemetery signs (contact OHCA for the correct name)
Build and erect fences (a survey and building permit may be required)
Build and erect benches or picnic tables
Build and erect interior cemetery signage or kiosk (plot information, etc.)
Build and erect cemetery shelter for signage or kiosk (plot information, etc.) (a building permit may be required)
Build and erect cemetery structure for maintenance equipment (a building permit may be required and a plot map will be necessary to avoid covering unmarked graves)
Erect a flagpole (a permit may be required)

Cemetery Markers: 
(permission will be required from descendants)

Place special memorial markers (these would be general reference markers not placed on graves or for individuals -- for instance, a plaque about the cemetery, a group of people buried there, or a structure placed there by an organization to commemorate a person or event)
Place new markers on unmarked graves (you must have a plot map, correct gravestone information, permission from the cemetery authority, and authority from descendants for the placement and gravestone information -- proceed very cautiously)
